Episode 80 — Prioritize Vulnerabilities Using Context: Exposure, Criticality, and Exploit Signals

Context tells you which vulnerabilities create reachable risk right now, which ones threaten the systems that matter most, and which ones are being actively exploited in the wild. When you prioritize with context, you reduce exposure where it counts and you shorten the time window attackers have to succeed. You also make remediation more sustainable because operations teams can see why certain fixes are urgent while others can wait. Criticality can be defined as the business importance of the affected asset, meaning it captures what harm occurs if that system is compromised or disrupted. Criticality includes whether the system supports revenue generation, safety, regulatory obligations, customer trust, or core operations that cannot tolerate downtime. It also includes data sensitivity, such as whether the system stores regulated data, proprietary intellectual property, or credentials that provide access to other systems. Criticality is not simply the system’s technical importance; it is the business consequence of failure.
