Episode 26 — Secure the SDLC by Embedding Security Requirements and Design Reviews

When security participates in grooming with a clear pattern of questions and reusable requirement sets, the process becomes predictable rather than disruptive. Predictability is what reduces resistance, because teams can plan rather than react. Lightweight design reviews are the second half of the approach, and they work best when they are framed as a short, structured conversation with clear questions rather than a broad critique. The review should also look at operational realities, including logging, monitoring, and how incidents will be detected and investigated once the system is live. The trick is to keep reviews small enough to fit into delivery cadence, while still being meaningful enough to prevent avoidable problems. This is why clear questions matter, because good questions surface the important unknowns quickly. Questions like what is the trust boundary, what identities can call this interface, what happens when input is malicious, and how will we detect abuse tend to reveal design gaps without demanding a full architecture rewrite. Translating threats into requirements can be done without heavy threat modeling frameworks by using simple abuse-case thinking. Abuse cases are short descriptions of how the system could be misused, such as an attacker attempting to enumerate accounts, bypass authorization, scrape data, or induce errors that reveal sensitive information. When you describe an abuse case in plain terms, it becomes easier to write a requirement that prevents it or limits impact. For instance, if the abuse case is an attacker brute-forcing credentials, the requirement might address rate limiting, account lockout behavior, and alerting for suspicious patterns. If the abuse case is unauthorized access to records, the requirement might address authorization checks, least privilege, and audit logging of access. Abuse-case thinking is especially effective for teams that are new to security, because it connects controls to concrete risks rather than abstract rules. Defaults also make reviews faster because reviewers can focus on deviations, which are where risk often hides. This approach is effective because it respects developer time while still raising consistency across the organization. It also makes onboarding easier, because new teams can learn what is expected without waiting for a security consultation. Defaults do not eliminate the need for judgment, but they provide a stable starting point that reduces both omissions and debate.
Now consider a scenario where a new application programming interface is shipped quickly and risks are missed, which is common when delivery pressure is high. Fast shipping tends to compress design discussion, and the first things cut are often non-functional concerns such as logging completeness, access control nuance, and safe failure behaviors. In this scenario, an early requirement set and a lightweight design review would have flagged the highest-risk gaps before code was committed deeply. For example, the review might surface that the API is externally reachable, that authentication is delegated to a gateway, and that authorization checks in the service are assumed rather than explicit.
